Introduction

This CD-ROM contains guidance for providers who offer contraception to clients with HIV, including those on antiretroviral (ARV) therapy. The information can be used in a variety of health care settings by providers who regularly offer family planning services and by those who want to begin integrating contraceptive services with HIV treatment and care services. The CD-ROM provides specific information about contraceptives for clients with HIV, possible interactions between contraceptives and ARVs, decisions clients with HIV may have to make, and advice about how to counsel them. Recommendations are compiled from a number of sources, including the Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use, a summary consensus of expert opinion published by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The CD-ROM contains: 1) a learning module/presentation that provides a succinct overview of the key issues; 2) a pre-/post-test to assess knowledge gaps and achievements; and 3) additional materials, including fact sheets, participant handouts, references and resources (hyperlinks or the full-text of key documents). The additional materials were carefully selected to supplement information for those who want to know more about the topic and to facilitate their efforts to provide contraceptives for their clients with HIV. The materials on the CD-ROM can be used for independent, self-paced study or for group presentations. Guidelines for using the materials in both situations are included.

The purpose of this CD-ROM is to familiarize providers with issues related to contraception for clients with HIV, including those using ARV therapy. Whether you are a presenter or a self-study learner, suggestions for adapting the materials to suit your needs are included in the How to Use section.
